CTCSS and DCS encoding/decoding integrated
For an easy repeater access or silent monitoring of occupied channels, circuits CTCSS and DCS (Digital Code Squelch) encoder/decoder are built-in. The data CTCSS and DCS configuration settings can be stored independently in each memory channel. A “Split Tone” mode also allows operation on systems where CTCSS and DCS are used separately on the uplink/downlink of the repeater.

Vast memory system
The FT-2980E provides a total of 221 memory channels, including 200 "normal" memories, ten pairs of bandwidth limit memories and a “Home” channel for instant recall that you can dedicate to a frequently used repeater or frequency simplex. Memories can store repeater switching information, CTCSS/DCS data, output power level, scan status (“Skip”) and alphanumeric labels.

Display of alpha-numeric channels
The memory channels they can be displayed with the channel frequency or an alphanumeric label customized, for easy channel recognition. It's possible to use up to six letters, characters or numbers for channel labeling.

WIRES Internet connection access functionality
The FT-2980E includes a conveniently located “Internet” button for quick access to repeaters connected to the Internet. The Internet repeater connection allows to use the FT-2980E to talk to other amateurs around the world, with extraordinary voice signal quality. The “Internet” button can be configured to send a single DTMF digit or a DTMF string, for example operation on a WIRES ™ repeater (Wide-Coverage Internet Repeater Enhancement System) or on other repeaters connected to the Internet using access DTMF tone. WX channels
A special Weather Band 10 memory bank channels is available in the American version, allowing quick access to NOAA weather broadcasts. When the “Severe Weather” at 1050 Hz, the FT-2980E can be configured to output a alarm tone to quickly attract attention. With the “Weather Alert” activated, the FT-2980E scans the ten Weather memories, stopping only if the 1050 Hz tone is received.
