The ID-5100 is designed to better appreciate the potential of the DStar* digital system in synergy with new technologies such as Bluetooth® connectivity and the Android operating system for terminal control of the second station (the optional UT-5100 unit is required 133, while the Android software is available for free). In addition to  new VS-3 Bluetooth® headset microphone, third-party Bluetooth® audio accessories can be used (although in some cases complete compatibility is not guaranteed).

The standard digital unit allows simultaneous stand-by for both bands (DV Dual Watch).

- The new integrated GPS engine is more sensitive and locks onto satellite signals faster than previous models.

- The separate controller is equipped with a "responsive" LCD touch screen.

- The automatic repeater search function has been improved to also include analog repeaters (Data relating to some repeaters may not be available for some versions or geographical areas).

- Independent VHF and UHF bands (possibility of VV/UU reception).

- 50W of RF power.

- Improved DR mode function (also includes analog repeaters).

- Added "Nearby Repeater Scan" function in DR scan mode.

- Improved D-PRS function

- Ability to use the D-Plus reflector (you can select "reflector" in the TO field).

- DV Dual Watch function to simultaneously watch two voice streams in DV mode (can only decode one stream).

- Home button (same function as in ID-51)

- 1000 memory channels / Number of RPT memories greater than the ID-51.

- GPS included (in the controller, connection with external antenna is not possible).

- ESN (Electronic Serial Number) / reader for SD Card slot (in the main body of the device).

- The optional UT-133 Bluetooth® unit allows the connection of audio accessories and Android terminals (CI-V via Bluetooth profile SPP).

- The VS-3 Bluetooth® headset/microphone with volume adjustment, PTT and 3 programmable buttons.

- The free downloadable RS-MS1A Android application allows you to control radio operations in DR mode, exchange text messages and images, and view your GPS location on Google Map.

- The new HM-207 remote control microphone is included. Due to changes in the user interface, the HM-133 microphone is no longer usable for device control (e.g. menu control from the remote microphone keys is no longer supported/possible).

- Thanks to the new firmware some features present in the models of the previous generation of D-Star devices are no longer necessary and therefore eliminated, such as:

- Wide receiver (receives only the following ranges 118-137 MHz (AM), 137-174 MHz, 375-550 MHz)
- Second antenna connector for RX Diversity function
- Connectivity for TNC/modem at 9600bps
- DTMF decoder (and mini-repeater control)
- Radio Cloning - Radio via cable
- Automatic callsign/repeater registration, no longer necessary thanks to the DR mode.
